Iaido: 1 hour (ages 9 and older) Musō Jikiden Eishin Ryū-Iaijutsu (MJER) is known as the most widely practiced style of Iai (sword drawing) in Japan, it is also one of the oldest living forms of Japanese martial arts, dating back 450 years. This particular style is called Yamauchi-ha and is headed by the 21st Soke, Komei Sekiguchi Sensei. Like any good martial art, MJER focuses on the harmony of the mind, body, and spirit. Class is always started by showing respect to the sword, to the dojo, and to the instructor. While sword techniques are not likely to be used for self defense, the principles taught may be performed with or without a sword. All techniques are of the philosophy that violence is only a last resort. Training begins with the 7 basic stances and attacks. It progresses on to 10 additional sets of Waza (techniques) involving formal demonstration, paired practice, practical application, and a flowing combination. Beginning students and students under the age of 16 will use a bokken (wood sword). All other students will use an iaito (dull metal sword). Shinken (sharp sword) will only be used during Tameshigiri (test cutting) with an instructor present. |

Judo / Jujitsu: 1 hour (ages 6 and older) This class is available three days a week and teaches both Kodokan Judo and Sanshinkai Jujitsu. Judo is best known for it's spectacular throwing techniques but also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds, arm locks and chokes. Judo emphasizes safety and full physical activity for top conditioning. Beginner students will participate in some simple falling instruction and learning to some of the very basics of judo technique. Some drill type work will be offered to you in the first class, along with a bit of watching. Their skill level will be determined in the first class and instruction will be based on that skill level. Sanshinkai Jujitsu has many components and strives for balance in its practitioners. A student or practitioner of Sanshinkai Jujitsu will become adept at both throwing and Mat or ground fighting. We use large circle and small circle grappling, throwing, pinning as well as striking an opponent. Sanshinkai Jujitsu students spend many months integrated with the "Karate" students to learn the fast footwork and stances of karate as well as the striking and blocking techniques of "Karate". In this way they are not at any disadvantage in standing position, unlike some other Jujitsu styles. |
